The OnePlus 2, termed the 2016 flagship killer by OnePlus turned out to be a big flop, a poor follow up to the original fantastic OnePlus One. With the release of the OnePlus 3 however, I think they really do have a very nicely designed and packaged phone on their hands.
With a solid aluminium unibody design, top of the line 2.2Ghz Snapdragon 820 processor, a whooping 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 3000 mAH battery, a 5.5 1080 Full HD optic AMOLED display, dual SIM Card slots and 64GB of UFS2.0 storage.
Up front is now an 5.5 full HD AMOLED display. While a 1440p 2K display would have been nice, what is even nicer will be the battery gains from pushing a higher resolution display. There’s also a 8MP camera for all your selfie needs.
Unlike the unreliable fingerprint scanner on the OnePlus 2, the one on the OnePlus 3 unlocks in a super quick 0.2 seconds.
The design is reminiscent of a few HTC devices but most definitely in a good way. The trademark sandstone black OnePlus is known for has been ditched in favour of the all new aluminium build.
The OnePlus 3 also comes with the newer USB Type C port. Along with that new port comes Dash Charging, OnePlus’s version of fast charge. With Dash Charge you can get about 63% charge in 30 minutes on the OnePlus 3. Upon further investigation, Dash is actually a licensed use of OPPO’s VOOC Fast Charge.
Moving on to the camera, there is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX 298 sensor with f2.0 aperture which has both optical and electronic Image Stabilization, Phase Detect auto focus and support for shooting RAW photos. For video it shoots video up to 4K and 720p in slow motion.
While there is no expandable storage, you get 64GB of UFS 2.0 storage right out of the box. NFC is also finally back in the OnePlus 3, something missing in the OnePlus 2.
Something that will please a lot of people is the removal of the Invite system. This means you can buy the device right now versus waiting for an invite to buy the device. For about USD499 or around RM2,045, this is well below the price of say the Samsung Galaxy S7.
